The day's AI story splits into two irreconcilable camps. On one side, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5, a model positioned as a sensible middle ground: Fable 5-level performance at half the cost and notably faster, with concrete safety improvements (prompt injection attacks down from 5.5% to 2.0%, safety classifier false positives plummeting from 42% to 5%). On the other, twenty-five companies—Microsoft, Nvidia, Meta among them—signed a statement defending open-weight models and distillation practices. Anthropic and OpenAI notably didn't sign, revealing a widening industry fault line. The economics are unforgiving: Moonshot's Kimi K3 delivers comparable code quality to Claude for a third of the price, if slower, and now accounts for over 30% of token usage on some platforms. Startups simply cannot afford the closed model premium anymore.
