Could AI slow science?

AI as Normal Technology 1 year ago 53

Researchers argue that while AI leaders predict it will accelerate science, the technology may actually worsen scientific progress by increasing paper production without improving actual breakthrough discoveries. Scientific publication has grown exponentially with papers doubling every 12 years since 2000, yet metascience evidence shows the rate of disruptive discoveries has remained constant or declined, suggesting a disconnect between research volume and genuine progress. If AI companies and funders continue accelerating production without addressing the bottlenecks limiting breakthrough discoveries—such as information overload preventing scientists from identifying genuinely novel work—the slowdown in meaningful scientific progress will likely continue.

Reflection AI Launches Asimov: Breakthrough Agent for Code Comprehension

Sequoia 1 year ago 18

Reflection AI launched Asimov, its research agent aimed at code comprehension and understanding engineering codebases. In blind tests against Cursor Ask and Claude Code (Sonnet 3.7 and 4), Asimov’s answers were preferred a majority of the time. The company is also positioning the product to build persistent, permissioned team “Memories” and to shift from third-party models to its own models for improved performance over time.
