Titans + MIRAS: Helping AI have long-term memory

Google Research 9 months ago 33

Researchers introduced Titans, a neural architecture, and MIRAS, a theoretical framework, that combine fast RNN-like processing with transformer-like accuracy by using deep neural networks as adaptive memory modules that selectively store surprising information. Titans achieved lower perplexity than Mamba-2 and Transformer++ on standard benchmarks and outperformed GPT-4 on the BABILong task despite having far fewer parameters. This enables models to efficiently handle context windows larger than 2 million tokens while adapting their memory in real-time without offline retraining.

Introducing OpenAI for Australia

OpenAI 9 months ago 16

OpenAI announced a dedicated initiative for Australia focused on building local AI infrastructure, training workers, and supporting the country's AI sector. The program aims to upskill 1.5 million workers across Australia. This establishes OpenAI's commitment to developing regional AI capabilities rather than relying solely on centralized global services.

Engineering more resilient crops for a warming climate

Google DeepMind 9 months ago 50

Scientists are using AlphaFold to predict enzyme structures and identify modifications that could make photosynthesis more heat-resistant in crops. A hybrid version of the enzyme glycerate kinase remained stable at temperatures up to 65°C, compared to the plant version which destabilizes at lower heat. This could help preserve crop yields as global temperatures rise and heat stress becomes more frequent.
