MatAlytics has picked up £619,000 in grant funding from Innovate UK, adding to an earlier £100k award. The startup traces its roots to a PhD research programme at the University of Nottingham in 2010. For this round, it put forward a frontier AI proof of concept for steel manufacturing built around its CITRUS software. The goal is to help steel and metal producers predict how slabs and components will behave under heat and stress, faster and more accurately than the old simulation methods they use now.

That matters because reheating slabs in gas-fired furnaces is expensive, slow and, by the source’s own framing, a bottleneck. MatAlytics says its physics-based AI can model thermomechanical behaviour, microstructure evolution and final mechanical properties in seconds. The older high-performance-computing simulations can take hours or days. If the new approach holds up in plants, manufacturers could use less natural gas, spend less on energy, improve product consistency and cut CO₂.

Dr Benedikt Engel, the company’s CEO and co-founder, says the funding should help move CITRUS from a promising proof of concept to something deployable, while also helping MatAlytics hire more technical and commercial staff. Innovate UK’s Damien Jefferies called the award well deserved and tied it to the Frontier AI programme’s aim of building globally competitive UK companies. The company also sees the same physics AI approach reaching beyond steel, into energy, aerospace, defence and automotive.
