Marvell’s early chipmaking gamble pays off amid AI demand
SiliconANGLE Mark Albertson
Marvell Technology skipped process-node steps in chipmaking to lead its custom cloud and data infrastructure business, building its AI-architecture platform around optical interconnect and memory efficiency. The company jumped from 12/16 nanometer directly to 5 nanometer and later moved to 3 nanometer and 2 nanometer (14 angstrom). Marvell says this supports higher-efficiency enterprise AI infrastructure, and it followed up with announcements including 2-nanometer optical interconnect technologies and a Photonic Fabric Memory Module for shared memory across AI systems.
Why it matters
Eight years ago, chipmaker Marvell Technology Inc. decided to play leapfrog with nanometers, and its trajectory has been steadily upward since. In semiconductor manufacturing, nanometer designations identify generations of chipmaking technology, known as process nodes, rather than the exact physical dimensions of transistors. Advanced process nodes generally enable greater transistor density and improvements in performance […] The post Marvell’s early chipmaking gamble pays off amid AI demand appeared first on SiliconANGLE.
