Marvin Minsky (1927–2016) was an American mathematician and computer scientist known for his work on artificial intelligence. He spent three years as a Junior Fellow of the Harvard Society of Fellows before joining the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1958, where he remained for the rest of his career. At MIT he co-founded the institution's AI laboratory and wrote extensively on AI and philosophy, holding the position of Toshiba Professor of Media Art & Sciences before becoming emeritus. Along with Claude Shannon, Nathaniel Rochester, and John McCarthy, he is regarded as one of the "fathers of AI" for his participation in the 1956 Dartmouth workshop that established artificial intelligence as a formal field of study.
