The biggest AI story today is the next step in OpenAI’s distribution strategy: it’s bringing its most advanced large language models to Google Cloud through Alphabet’s Model Garden service. OpenAI says Astra, its flagship GPT-6 Astra model, will be paired with smaller GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna variants, priced at 5x and 100x less per token than Astra. That matters because token cost is where pilots either scale or stall, and Model Garden is Google’s attempt to turn model selection into something closer to procurement than experimentation.
The rollout also hints at where enterprise buyers are going next. Google Cloud customers will be able to run the models on Confidential Compute infrastructure, and access them via Antigravity and Gemini Agent offerings—an awkward-sounding but straightforward stack aimed at keeping data protected while still plugging models into agent workflows. Timing is tight: Astra and the other variants are expected to be generally available in Model Garden within a few weeks, which should make side-by-side testing easier for teams already standardized on Google’s cloud.
For executives, this is less about “getting” OpenAI and more about getting predictable deployments: model tiering, clear pricing, and a security story that fits the realities of regulated industries.
