Measuring Goodhart’s law

OpenAI 4 years ago 4

OpenAI has begun quantifying Goodhart's law—the principle that metrics lose their validity when used as optimization targets—because the company struggles to measure some of its core objectives directly. The research examines how specific metrics degrade when they become targets for optimization, rather than mere observations. This allows OpenAI to better balance pursuing measurable goals while accounting for the distortion that measurement-based optimization introduces.

Machine Learning Experts - Lewis Tunstall

Hugging Face 4 years ago 31

Lewis Tunstall, a machine learning engineer at Hugging Face, discusses his work on transformer models, his book "NLP with Transformers," and the free Hugging Face Course designed to teach developers about natural language processing. He has spent the past nine months at Hugging Face developing features that export transformer models to the ONNX format, allowing engineers to run models with faster latency and higher throughput in production environments. The course currently has two released parts with a third planned this year, expanding to cover transformers applied to audio and computer vision beyond traditional NLP tasks.
