OpenAI added opt-in text watermarking to its API using a new system called textGrain that embeds a detectable signal into generated text. The detector identifies about 80% of watermarked 200-token passages at a 1% false-positive rate. Watermarking stays off by default for API customers (unlike Anthropic’s approach), while OpenAI plans EU auto-watermarking for eligible ChatGPT and Codex output to meet EU AI Act transparency requirements.
OpenAI is adding visual display ads to ChatGPT so they appear alongside images users generate. The ads will start rolling out later this month in the U.S. for an initial test group of advertisers. The change expands OpenAI’s ad measurement and brand-suitability tools while keeping ads clearly labeled and not affecting the answers ChatGPT provides.
A publicist for OpenAI interrupted a Vanity Fair interview with CEO Sam Altman after the editor raised a ChatGPT user’s suicide. The episode happened during Sam Altman’s interview with Vanity Fair’s Mark Guiducci. The interviewer was pushed to “move on” to a different topic rather than continuing the discussion about the case.
OpenAI introduced a new visual ad format in ChatGPT and expanded its measurement tools, attribution partnerships, and brand suitability features for advertisers. The update includes “ChatGPT visual ads,” launched on March 2025. Advertisers can now run visual ads inside ChatGPT while using upgraded measurement and targeting suitability capabilities.
OpenAI paused new sign-ups for its $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro 200 plan and then reopened sign-ups with revised usage limits after shifting capacity away from GPT-6 Astra demand. The Pro 200 plan’s usage multiplier dropped from 20x to 10x compared with the $20-a-month Plus tier, a 50% reduction. Existing subscribers got a short grace period with usage credits, and OpenAI framed the change as tied to compute-heavy DevDay features and newer, more efficient models.
OpenAI began testing a new ad format in ChatGPT that shows sponsored product images on your screen during image generation. Testing is set to start in the US later this month. The ads will be added alongside image outputs but remain separate and won’t change the answers, and they will not show for ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscribers.
Plugins Radar tracks the ChatGPT plugin directory to rank and compare plugins across 192 common searches, and lets users monitor competitors and receive email updates. It supports looking up 5,000+ plugins. As a result, plugin makers can identify where their listings rank, which rivals they overlap with, and which searches they miss.
Search engines still receive far more web traffic than AI chatbots, according to OneLittleWeb’s analysis of visits across 10,171 websites. Search engines logged 162.19 billion visits in June 2026 versus 8.26 billion for AI chatbots. The gap narrows only in part because both categories declined from the previous month, while the remaining traffic share stays concentrated in Google for search and ChatGPT for chatbots.
