Z.ai Launches ZCode Free Coding Tool

Z.ai has thrown a new contender into the AI coding ring, and this one comes with a hook that's hard to ignore: it's free. ZCode, built on the company's GLM-5.2 model, is now positioning itself directly against paid heavyweights like Cursor, Claude Code, and GitHub Copilot, tools that have spent the last couple of years locking developers into monthly subscriptions.

The pitch is simple. Why pay $20 or more a month for an AI pair programmer when a Chinese lab is offering comparable functionality without the invoice? Z.ai isn't a household name in the West the way Anthropic or GitHub's parent Microsoft are, but GLM models have been quietly climbing benchmark charts, and the company clearly thinks this is the moment to convert technical credibility into market share.

This isn't happening in a vacuum. The coding assistant space has become one of the most crowded corners of the AI industry, with Cursor's valuation ballooning and Anthropic leaning hard into Claude Code as a flagship product. Undercutting all of them on price is a classic move for a challenger without the brand recognition to compete on reputation alone — give developers a reason to try you that costs nothing but a few minutes of setup time.

What's less clear from Z.ai's announcement is how ZCode holds up on the details that actually matter to working developers: context window size, latency, how well it handles large codebases, and whether the free tier has usage caps waiting to appear once adoption grows. Free is a great headline, but coding tools live or die on whether they save time or create more debugging headaches than they solve.
