The Sequence Opinion #921: AI’s Sixth Layer Is Finance

Every AI token starts as an electron, but the bill shows up before the answer does. That’s the quiet truth behind the clean little box on the screen: what feels weightless is propped up by heavy machinery and a lot of money.

Jensen Huang’s five-layer cake gets the structure right. Energy feeds the system. Chips do the work. Infrastructure ties many chips together. Models turn raw computation into something reusable. Applications turn that into value. Demand then pushes back down through the stack, all the way toward the power plant.

But that map leaves out something essential. The cake sits on a balance sheet. Power contracts, transformers, cooling loops, network fabrics, accelerators, depreciation schedules, debt covenants, and the people keeping all of it busy are not side details. They are the real operating system behind the AI interface.

That is why finance deserves to be treated as the sixth layer. The glamorous part is the prompt box. The part that decides how far the whole thing can scale is whether the economics hold together underneath it. And that is a very different problem.

In other words, AI is not just a software story or even just an infrastructure story. It is also a financing story, and the industry keeps pretending that the money is an implementation detail. It isn’t.
