Research with ChatGPT

OpenAI has published a walkthrough explaining how to get more out of ChatGPT's research capabilities, specifically the search feature and the deep research mode. The pitch is simple: instead of relying on the model's training data, which has a cutoff and gaps, you can point ChatGPT at the live web to pull current information, then have it analyze and organize that material into something structured and usable.

Search is the lighter-weight tool here. It lets ChatGPT fetch fresh results for things like recent news, product releases, or fast-moving topics where yesterday's knowledge cutoff just doesn't cut it. Deep research is the heavier lift, designed for multi-step investigations where you need the model to pull from several sources, cross-check claims, and stitch together a coherent summary rather than a single quick answer.

What OpenAI is really selling is a workflow change. Instead of treating ChatGPT as a chatbot that answers from memory, the guide positions it as a research partner that can be directed toward specific questions, told to verify sources, and asked to produce something closer to a briefing document than a chat reply. That's a meaningful shift for anyone using the tool for work that requires citations or up-to-date accuracy, like market research, academic prep, or competitive analysis.

None of this is entirely new territory. Perplexity, Google's AI tools, and others have been pushing similar search-plus-synthesis features for a while. What OpenAI is doing is consolidating its own version of that pitch into one clear guide, presumably because a lot of users still don't realize ChatGPT can do this at all, or don't know when to reach for search versus deep research.
