OpenAI Five defeated OG, the Dota 2 world champions, in two consecutive matches at the Finals this weekend, marking the first time an AI system has beaten esports world champions in competition. Both games were played live on stream, whereas prior AI systems like DeepMind's AlphaStar had only beaten professional players in private matches before losing in public competition. This achievement demonstrates that AI can now perform at the highest competitive level in complex team-based video games requiring real-time decision-making.
Why it matters
OpenAI Five is the first AI to beat the world champions in an esports game, having won two back-to-back games versus the world champion Dota 2 team, OG, at Finals this weekend. Both OpenAI Five and DeepMind’s AlphaStar had previously beaten good pros privately but lost their live pro matches, making this also the first time an AI has beaten esports pros on livestream.
