Nvidia has confirmed it will buy Hugging Face for $12.93bn, turning one of AI’s most popular model hubs into part of its expanding empire. The move is a clear vote for open-source AI models, and another sign that Nvidia is still willing to spend heavily across the ecosystem that depends on its chips.

Jensen Huang said Nvidia plans to grow Hugging Face’s platform, harden its infrastructure, and widen access for developers and institutions. He also said the company will keep supporting open source and open weight models from across the ecosystem, while preserving multi-cloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment so builders can choose the hardware and infrastructure that fit their work.

The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027. By then, Hugging Face will still be doing what it has become known for: hosting models, tools, datasets and a place for developers and researchers to publish and collaborate. The company says its hub hosts three million models and is used by around 18 million developers.

This isn’t Nvidia’s first tie-up with Hugging Face. It backed the company in a $235m Series D round in 2023, when Hugging Face was valued at $4.5bn, its last known valuation. Nvidia already had more than 500 AI models on the platform, and this acquisition makes the relationship far more direct. For a company that keeps talking about open AI while selling the picks and shovels, that’s the point of the whole thing.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is Nvidia buying the town square after already selling the stalls. The open-source pitch sounds noble, but it also keeps the platform close to the chipmaker that benefits when everyone builds more AI. Very on brand: embrace the ecosystem, then make sure the ecosystem comes with a receipt.
