Google and OpenAI have both crossed the billion-user line, but they got there in very different ways and on very different clocks. Google also says 63 percent of Gemini users talk to it by voice, more than 150 million images are generated every day, and over 100 million active users are on iOS.
But the two billion-user claims do not line up neatly. Google is talking about one app: Gemini. OpenAI is counting all of its AI interfaces, mainly ChatGPT but also Codex and ChatGPT Work, and it does not say whether the figure is weekly or monthly active users. The last official OpenAI number was about 900 million weekly active users in February 2026. Google’s Gemini app also sits alongside AI Mode in Search, which is counted separately and also reaches more than one billion monthly active users.
A Similarweb report from August 2 adds another wrinkle. By its measure, ChatGPT leads on reach, Gemini is second, Claude has been rising from February 2026, and Perplexity has been slipping since its October 2025 peak. ChatGPT also leads on retention, while Claude slightly beats Gemini there. On growth rate, Claude is first in percentage terms, followed by Perplexity and Gemini, while ChatGPT adds the most users in absolute numbers because its base is already so large.
