Caterpillar has spent years solving a problem that now haunts almost every AI rollout: how to make advanced tech work in the real world, where people, machines and messy workflows all have to line up. The company started in mining, where shortages and dangerous conditions make automation easier to justify, and built out a wide autonomous stack from haul trucks and drilling gear to underground loaders, dozers and remote-controlled construction equipment.

Now it’s trying to carry that experience into places that are less controlled and a lot harder to automate. CTO Jaime Mineart told TechCrunch at Ai4 in Las Vegas that the company sees an opportunity to move from mining into “much more dynamic environments, jobsites, quarries, and construction sites.” The difference matters. Caterpillar is already pushing AI beyond machines. Its Cat AI Assistant lets field technicians use voice commands beside a machine to pull up repair steps, troubleshoot issues and spot parts before a repair starts. Mineart said customers, operators and technicians are using it, and that it draws on Caterpillar’s own data from connected machines.

That data moat is substantial. Mineart said Caterpillar has about 1.6 million connected assets worldwide and more than 16 petabytes of structured data. The company is also using AI for site scanning, digital twins in manufacturing, enterprise operations and software development, where Mineart said AI agents help modernize legacy code, generate and test new software, and catch defects earlier.

But the bigger challenge is human, not technical. Caterpillar says the hard part of physical AI is folding it into customer workflows, and that experienced operators help train the systems with knowledge built over decades. As machines take on more work, some operators may move from running one machine to supervising several from a remote command center. To support that shift, Caterpillar plans to spend $100 million over five years training its 118,000 employees in AI, autonomy and robotics.
