AI revenue hit an annualized $229 billion by late August. But the boom is still squeezing margins at companies selling the gear.

The AI economy keeps getting bigger, and the latest estimate puts annualized revenue at $229 billion by the end of August. That is 3.5 times higher than a year earlier. The pace is still brisk, not just a one-off spike.

The trailing twelve-month number hit $140 billion last month. A year before, in August 2025, it was $44 billion. That makes the run-up easy to say and harder to ignore: the business tied to AI is no longer a sideshow, even by the numbers.

But the money is not landing evenly. Snowflake trimmed its full-year product gross-margin guide from 75% to 74%, saying the fastest-growing AI workloads “carry a lower contribution margin today.” That is the kind of line investors read twice.

Investor Tomasz Tunguz estimates AI makes up about 4% to 5% of Snowflake’s revenue today. So the workloads are already meaningful, yet still expensive enough to dent margins. That is the current trick with AI: the top line looks great, while the bill shows up somewhere else.

There is one more wrinkle in the data. AI-attributed US job cuts fell in August, ending a five-month streak as the most-cited reason for layoffs. Even so, they still account for 22% of this year’s cuts. The pressure eased, but it did not disappear.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the part of AI everyone loves to skip: the revenue is real, and so is the margin squeeze. The industry keeps selling a future of abundance while quietly charging today’s customers for the privilege of subsidizing it. Classic silicon valley: grow first, explain the economics later.
