The biggest thread today was Europe putting real money behind sovereign, open-weight AI—starting with Mistral. The startup’s €3 billion Series D, led by Samsung Electronics, lifts its post-money valuation to over €21 billion and doubles down on more than just model training. Mistral is explicitly moving toward a “neocloud” stack, using the fresh capital to expand compute for larger models, build infrastructure products, and push international growth, with Samsung and other backers positioned as both suppliers and shareholders.
