Texas just hit the brakes on data center expansion, and the numbers are staggering. Governor Greg Abbott ordered state regulators to audit all new data center projects before they connect to the grid, citing grid strain and power costs. ERCOT's interconnection queue has swollen to 474 gigawatts of pending projects—over 90 percent data centers—more than doubling since January and representing five times the grid's peak demand. This matters because Texas has become the de facto capital of AI infrastructure, and halting approvals could reshape where compute actually lands.
