Price moves around recent events

Correlation does not establish causation. Market moves have many simultaneous causes — macro news, sector rotation, earnings and unrelated company events — and the timing of our daily closes may not align with when an event actually reached the market (pre-announcements, leaks, after-hours trading). Moves are shown next to the S&P 500 (SPY) over the same window so market-wide swings are visible, not hidden. None of this is investment advice.

The TLDRocket take Q2 2026 · written 5 Aug 2026

IBM broke its beat streak this quarter: Q2 2026 EPS came in at 2.93 against a 3.00 estimate, a 2.3% miss, after three straight quarters of topping expectations — 4.7% in Q1 2026, 3.6% in Q4 2025, 7.3% in Q3 2025. That's a real deceleration, not just noise, and it lands right as the company has been telling investors that its software revenue softness is a timing issue rather than a demand problem, with about a third of delayed large deals reportedly already closing. This quarter's number doesn't confirm or refute that story either way — one miss after three beats could be the 'delay' catching up, or it could be the first sign the delay is turning into something else. The data here doesn't tell us which.

What IBM has been shipping doesn't look like a company pulling back. It's stacking bets across quantum (the HRL Laboratories acquisition, the $50 million Genesis Mission commitment for quantum access), AI security (co-founding the Open Secure AI Alliance with Nvidia and Microsoft, alongside SpaceX), and developer tooling (Project Lightwell for legacy code, the CodeAlchemy synthetic dataset spanning 15 languages, and EveryEvalEver with Hugging Face for standardizing AI benchmarks). That's a lot of surface area — governance, infrastructure, accelerators, agents, security all show up twice in recent coverage — which suggests IBM is trying to be everywhere AI touches enterprise IT rather than picking one lane. The security alliance is notably missing OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, and reportedly formed after a contained-but-scary AI incident at OpenAI, which says something about where IBM sees its wedge: not building frontier models, but selling the plumbing and guardrails around them.

The honest read is that IBM's earnings pattern and its product pipeline are telling two different stories right now, and we don't have enough detail — no revenue breakdown, no segment guidance here — to reconcile them. A single miss after three beats, with a company simultaneously placing chips on quantum, code security, and AI benchmarking infrastructure, reads less like a turn and more like a company betting long on plumbing while its near-term numbers wobble. Whether that bet pays off is a longer conversation than one quarter's EPS can settle.
