Price moves around recent events

Correlation does not establish causation. Market moves have many simultaneous causes — macro news, sector rotation, earnings and unrelated company events — and the timing of our daily closes may not align with when an event actually reached the market (pre-announcements, leaks, after-hours trading). Moves are shown next to the S&P 500 (SPY) over the same window so market-wide swings are visible, not hidden. None of this is investment advice.

The TLDRocket take Q3 2026 · written 5 Aug 2026

Apple missed this quarter, and not by a rounding error: $1.91 against a $2.05 estimate is a 6.9% shortfall, the steepest in the four quarters we have on record. Trace the trend and it is not flattering — a 2.4% beat last fall, a smaller 1.1% beat the quarter after, then a slim 0.9% miss, and now this. Two misses in a row, with the second one widening sharply, is the kind of pattern that turns "noisy quarter" into "actual trend" if it continues.

The timing is awkward given what Apple has been trying to sell the market on. The company is finally shipping the upgraded Siri in iOS 27, adding a paid iCloud+ tier for heavy AI users, and reportedly building out a HomePad hub to put that assistant in more rooms of your house. All of that costs money before it makes money, and it is landing while Apple is also fighting OpenAI in court over trade secrets tied to hardware AI devices — a dispute that has gotten personal enough that OpenAI is publishing internal emails to make its case in public. Whether any of that legal noise or Siri's relaunch shows up in the earnings line is not something this data set tells us; we only have the EPS prints, not revenue breakdowns or segment detail.

Worth flagging what we don't know here: no guidance, no unit sales, no services-versus-hardware split, so it's hard to say whether the miss is Siri-related spending, broader iPhone softness, or something else entirely. What we can say is that the direction of surprises has flipped negative twice running, and Apple is simultaneously trying to convince people its AI assistant is finally good while suing a rival, OpenAI, over how that assistant's underlying tech came to be. Two data points do not make a crisis, but they are enough to make the next print worth watching closely.
