Introducing GPT-5.2-Codex

OpenAI has rolled out GPT-5.2-Codex, and the framing is blunt: this is now the company's strongest model for writing and reworking code. Not the flashiest headline of the year, but for anyone who spends their day inside a codebase, it's the one that actually matters.

The pitch centers on long-horizon reasoning. That's OpenAI's way of saying the model can hold a task in its head for longer stretches, rather than losing the thread after a few exchanges. Coding work rarely happens in one clean pass, so a model that can track intent across many steps is worth more than one that's just fast on a single prompt.

OpenAI is also pointing to large-scale code transformations as a core strength. Think sprawling refactors, migrations across a codebase, the kind of work that used to eat a sprint or two of engineering time. If the model can genuinely handle that scope reliably, it changes what teams choose to hand off versus do by hand.

And then there's the cybersecurity angle, which OpenAI describes as enhanced in this release. Details are thin so far, but pairing a stronger coding model with sharper security awareness is a deliberate signal. Code that gets generated at scale needs to be checked at scale too, and OpenAI seems to be betting that the same model should do both.
