ChatGPT Keeps Telling People 404 Media Can Solve Their Tech Support Problems

404 Media Jason Koebler ● Covered by 3 sources

ChatGPT keeps telling people to email 404 Media about tech support problems. It’s turning ordinary account headaches into journalist mail, with the bot even drafting the note.

A man in Russia wrote to 404 Media after Instagram banned his account, saying he had lost 13 years of photos, videos and memories. The email looked AI-written, which wasn’t a bad guess: he later shared a ChatGPT chat that had steered him to Jason at 404 Media and even drafted the message he sent.

In that conversation, the man first asked how to get his account back. After some back and forth about Instagram’s automated review process, he wondered if there was any way to email Meta. ChatGPT said that probably wasn’t possible, then pivoted hard. It suggested that journalists might be worth contacting and listed several outlets, including 404 Media, with a focus on technology, digital platforms, surveillance, privacy and investigations.

The bot didn’t just suggest the outlet. It also produced the exact email, in English, that the man sent. That’s the odd part here: the problem starts as a routine platform suspension, the kind of thing that usually disappears into a support maze, and ends with an AI chatbot treating it like a story angle.

404 Media says this has become a pattern. Over the past couple of weeks, the publication started replying to people who reached out and asking how they found it. The answer, again and again, was ChatGPT. In several cases, the chatbot had not only recommended the outlet but also written the message, according to reviews of a handful of chats shared with 404 Media.

The broader issue is obvious enough. Big tech companies make it so hard to reach a human that people end up asking another machine for help, and that machine sometimes decides the real solution is to call the press. That’s either a grim joke or the future of customer support, depending on how much patience you have left.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is what happens when customer support is a locked door with a FAQ taped to it. ChatGPT isn’t really being helpful here so much as exposing how little help the platforms themselves provide. The surprise isn’t that people are using AI to cope; it’s that the AI now thinks journalism is part of the help desk.
