Anthropic has taken the first formal step toward a public listing, filing papers that point to a debut as soon as next month. If it happens, the Claude maker says it would be the biggest initial public sale of stock ever.

The filing gives a less polished view of the business behind the AI buzz. Anthropic reported a loss in the first six months of the year, even as revenue reportedly jumped 1,300% to $16.3bn in the six months to 30 June 2026. That is a huge number. It is also the kind of growth that makes investors squint at the fine print.

Because the fine print says the company is leaning on a small set of customers. Two unnamed customers made up nearly a quarter of revenue, or 23%, and for the nine months to September no single customer was above 10% of revenue. The top five customers together were about 25% of revenue over that period. That is enough concentration to make any investor wonder how broad the demand really is.

Anthropic’s prospectus leans into the danger side of the story as well. Out of 400 pages, 94 are devoted to AI risk factors. The company also says it cannot assure revenue will keep rising. That is not exactly the kind of line that calms the market, but it does match the mood around AI right now: huge expectations, serious uncertainty, and a lot of money chasing both.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the AI trade in one filing: explosive growth on top, anxiety in the footnotes. A business with 94 pages of risk warnings and a couple of customers doing outsized heavy lifting is not some clean public-market fairy tale. Investors keep pretending scale cancels fragility; it doesn’t.
