Visual Salamandra: Pushing the Boundaries of Multimodal Understanding

Hugging Face 1 year ago 6

The Language Technologies Lab released Visual Salamandra, a multimodal extension of its Salamandra large language model that processes images, video, and text inputs. The model uses a 7 billion parameter architecture combining Google's SigLIP encoder with a custom MLP projector trained across four phases on 6.1 million instruction-tuning instances, including 842,000 text-only samples. Visual Salamandra supports tasks including visual question answering, optical character recognition, document analysis, and mathematical reasoning, with emphasis on European language representation.

Defending against Prompt Injection with Structured Queries (StruQ) and Preference Optimization (SecAlign)

BAIR 1 year ago 51

Researchers propose StruQ and SecAlign, two fine-tuning methods to defend LLMs against prompt injection attacks where untrusted data contains instructions that override legitimate system prompts. SecAlign reduces the attack success rate of optimization-based attacks to below 15%, a 4x improvement over previous approaches, while maintaining utility on general benchmarks. These defenses use special delimiter tokens to separate trusted instructions from untrusted data and train models to ignore injected instructions in the data portion.
