Hume AI CEO Andrew Ettinger explains that voice AI can sound human while still failing to capture the meaning-carrying signals in speech. He says transcripts can strip away multiple parts of communication such as tone and background noise, leaving systems with a “listening problem.” As a result, voice AI development focuses more on evaluation in real-world conditions, better modeling of emotion as a spectrum, and addressing new safety and personalization risks when agents talk back.
Willow Care Inc. chose CoreWeave for forward-deployed support to handle reinforcement-learning infrastructure for its AI dictation app Willow Voice. It will have “no keyboard” in about two years, by having users’ speech directly understood by their computer. As a result, Willow shifts its focus to eval alignment while scaling training and increasing inference work as dictation demand rises.
Google released an experimental offline note-taking app, Google AI Edge Foresight, that transcribes meetings and audio files on a Mac and summarizes them while you take notes. It uses Google’s on-device EmbeddingGemma 2 model and is free to use. Users can write shorthand bullet points during the meeting and have the app convert them into polished notes from the transcript, without sending the audio to the cloud.
