YouTube sticks new labels on AI-generated songs

The Verge Stevie Bonifield ● Covered by 2 sources

YouTube is labeling songs “Made with AI” when AI altered or made them. It’s not for every AI tool use, just the kind that helps make the music itself.

YouTube is starting to slap a “Made with AI” label on songs that were altered or fully generated with AI. The company says it’s taking a similar approach to the AI labels it already uses on videos, so the music side is finally catching up to a policy that video creators have already had to live with.

This doesn’t sound like a blanket tag for every brush with an AI tool. YouTube says the label covers cases like using a generative model to create the composition and vocals. That’s a fairly specific line, and it matters: plenty of production software now uses AI in one way or another, but YouTube is drawing attention to the stuff that directly shapes the song itself.

For music partners who upload tracks, YouTube has also set out how they should disclose generative AI use. And if they don’t disclose it, the company says it may rely on “other signals” to decide whether a song is AI-generated. That gives YouTube a fallback when the paperwork doesn’t tell the full story.

The label rollout starts today, according to YouTube. It’s a small badge, but it signals a bigger shift: platforms are starting to treat AI music as something audiences should be told about, not quietly buried in the credits.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the sane move. AI music is already flooding the internet, and pretending every track is just another human creation was getting embarrassing. Clear labels beat the usual platform fog machine, even if the tagging will still be messy at the edges.
