ChatGPT is getting a visual makeover with GPT-6. OpenAI says it’ll swap some walls of text for charts, buttons and forms when that helps.

OpenAI is giving ChatGPT a new “Intelligent UI” layer, and it’s meant to make the chatbot feel less like a text box and more like something you can actually poke at. In a briefing today, the company said GPT-6 can decide when an answer should arrive with graphics, tappable buttons, forms and charts instead of a long plain response.
The pitch is simple: if a question needs more than words, ChatGPT can build the extra bits right into the reply. OpenAI showed that with a bicycle example, where a user asking how to assemble a 7-speed bike got a visual breakdown of the main parts and a button to drill into each one. Another demo used a lamb roast plan with pictures of the dishes and a recipe that could recalculate ingredients when the number of guests changed.
OpenAI says these visuals come from a library of components the GPT-6 models were pre-trained on. For lighter prompts, the chatbot will still default to text. But users can also ask for a more interactive answer and have the response reformatted on demand.
The company’s stated goal is to make complex topics easier to learn. Aarush Selvan, an OpenAI product manager, also framed ChatGPT as a tool for getting things done, not just chatting, and said the most helpful answers for everyday tasks like planning a recipe or a trip are not always pure text.
There’s a familiar smell to all this. Google already rolled out a “Generative Interface” with Gemini 3 last year, and OpenAI’s version sounds a bit more colorful and graphics-heavy. OpenAI didn’t say whether the new UI will burn more tokens, though it’s hard to imagine all those visual extras coming for free. It also didn’t address how the new format will handle hallucinations, which feels like the sort of small detail people tend to notice after the demo applause dies down.
OpenAI is rolling the feature out today for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, with workplace admins needing to switch it on in Enterprise. Free users and Go subscribers get it tomorrow.
My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting
This is OpenAI doing what OpenAI does best: dressing up the box and calling it a better brain. The real question isn’t whether charts and buttons look nicer; it’s whether they make the answer clearer, or just make the ad slots prettier later on. Beautiful interfaces are fine, but clarity should still be the product.
