Mistral raises €3B to make sovereign, open-weight AI the technology frontier

Mistral has closed a €3 billion Series D at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion. The company says that makes it the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company, and it comes only three years after launch.

Samsung Electronics led the round. Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing backer PSG Equity were co-leads. Advent, BlackRock-managed funds and accounts, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg also came in as new investors, while a long list of existing supporters participated again.

The money is meant to do a few things at once: broaden frontier research, increase compute for training bigger models, expand infrastructure, and push commercial growth and international reach. Mistral says it now operates in 20 countries and supports more than 125 global enterprises on mission-critical AI work, including Airbus, ASML and HSBC.

The company is pitching a very specific answer to the current AI problem. Not just who can build the strongest model, but how organizations and governments can use AI without handing over control of their data, infrastructure and deployment choices. Mistral says it is building the full stack for that: open-weight models, the infrastructure they run on, and the products that take them into production.

That full-stack pitch is also the point of the “sovereign AI layer” language. Mistral says its setup keeps data inside an organization’s boundaries, makes models controllable and customizable, keeps compute private and predictable, and leaves production systems auditable. With Series C money coming from ASML and Series D money from Samsung, the backers are as much a signal as the valuation.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is exactly where the AI money should be going: not into another glossy demo, but into infrastructure people can actually control. The closed-model crowd loves convenience right up until procurement, compliance and geopolitics show up at the door. Sovereign AI sounds bureaucratic until the alternative is renting your company’s brain from someone else’s cloud.
