Mistral just raised €3 billion at a €21 billion-plus valuation. It says the money will build its own AI compute, not just models.

Mistral AI has closed a Series D worth €3 billion, valuing the Paris-based company at more than €21 billion after the round. The company says that makes it the largest equity funding round ever done by a European technology firm. For a startup founded roughly three years ago, that is a very fast climb.

Samsung Electronics led the round. EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity co-led it, with PSG returning as an existing investor. After a Series C led by ASML, another industrial name is back at the top of the cap table. That mix says as much about Mistral’s pitch as the valuation does: this is not just an AI model company trying to keep up with the US giants.

The new money brings in Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg as a state investor. Existing backers including a16z, General Catalyst, Lightspeed, Salesforce Ventures, Hillspire, NVIDIA, DST Global, Index Ventures and Headline are staying in. On the European side, ASML, Belfius, BNP Paribas CIB, Bpifrance, Carmignac, Eurazeo, Korelya Capital and Phoenix Court’s Solar fund are all still there. The shareholder base now stretches across Europe, North America and Asia.

Mistral says the capital will mostly go into its own compute: bigger training runs, more infrastructure and international expansion. It says it already operates in 20 countries and serves more than 125 large enterprises, including Airbus, ASML and HSBC. But the bigger story is the pivot it has now underwritten. Mistral has shifted from being a pure model maker to a European neocloud, with Regional Endpoints, a Priority Tier, support for third-party open-source models and a push to turn long-term customer commitments into European Compute Units that pre-finance data centre build-out.

By 2030, the company wants up to 1 gigawatt of capacity online. A billion-euro deal with Microsoft, in which Microsoft invests in European compute capacity and uses it as a customer, sits on top of that plan. Mistral’s sales pitch is now simple enough to fit on one slide: keep the models, the compute and the production systems under control, and call that sovereignty.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the most European AI story possible: raise money from everyone, then sell the dream of not depending on anyone. The neat part is that it’s not just model hype anymore; it’s steel, chips and contracts. That’s also the trap, because once an AI company starts talking like a utility, it has to build like one.
