ASML's last two quarters have been clean beats: Q1 2026 came in at 7.15 versus 6.67 expected, and Q2 2026 landed at 7.58 against a 6.93 estimate, a 9.4% surprise. That's a reversal from the back half of 2025, when the company undershot estimates twice running — a 4.8% miss in Q4 2025 and a smaller 1.4% miss in Q3. Two beats don't erase two misses, but the direction of travel matters more than the noise, and right now it's pointed up.

What's driving that swing isn't in the data we have — ASML's core business is selling extreme ultraviolet lithography machines to chipmakers like TSMC and Samsung, and this record doesn't tell us anything about order backlogs, China export restrictions, or the AI-chip capex cycle that actually moves ASML's top line. Our own coverage skews toward a side story: ASML led a €1.7 billion Series C into Mistral AI, valuing the French lab at €11.7 billion, and Mistral has since built products — Workflows, Forge, an industrial AI stack shown at AI Now Summit 2026 — that reportedly use ASML as a customer or partner. That's a strategic bet on AI tooling for its own engineering and manufacturing, not a driver of the EPS beat itself, and we shouldn't conflate the two.

So the honest read is: earnings momentum turned positive after a soft patch, and separately, ASML is spending some of its considerable cash pile on AI infrastructure via Mistral rather than just plowing it into R&D for next-gen lithography. Whether that Mistral stake pays off, and whether the EPS beats continue, are open questions this data doesn't answer.
