Mistral and Black Forest Labs backer Headline closes $400M European fund

Tech.eu Cate Lawrence

Headline closed a $400M fund for European Seed and Series A startups, with AI at the center. It’s another big bet that Europe’s next AI names are already being built there.

Headline has closed Headline EU VIII, an eighth early-stage fund aimed at European founders. The vehicle is $400 million and will invest in Seed and Series A companies across Europe, with AI as a clear focus.

That is a familiar shape for Headline, which says it has been active for two decades and now manages more than $5 billion. The firm works with founders from Seed through Growth, and its team is spread across Berlin, Hamburg, Luxembourg, Paris, London, San Francisco, São Paulo, Taipei and Tokyo.

The list of European companies in its portfolio is long and telling. Headline points to Mistral and Black Forest Labs, but also Fundamental Technologies, Attio, Bioptimus, AMI Labs, Recursive Superintelligence, Farfetch, Raisin, Natural Cycles, Staffbase, DeepIP, Payflows, Primo, Searchable, Notch and Procure AI. The point isn’t just breadth. It’s that Headline wants to be in the room early, and stay there.

Mistral is the clearest example. Headline first backed Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix at Seed in 2023, only weeks after the company was founded, and has invested in every round since. That included the Series D through Headline’s Global Growth Fund. Mensch says Headline played a key role in Mistral’s $415 million Series A, which he calls the largest Series A ever raised in Europe.

The firm is also leaning hard into the idea that European founders are building with global scale in mind from the start. Christian Miele says that has become more obvious with each fund, and Jon Userovici says the next generation of great AI companies is being built in Europe right now. Headline also says it has helped European companies expand to the US, including Farfetch, NGINX and Semrush, by helping with setup, hires, customers and eventual cross-border listings.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

Headline is doing what the best European VCs should do: write early, stick around, and stop pretending the continent needs to wait for permission. The real tell here is not the size of the fund, but the willingness to back companies from Seed all the way into growth without the usual handoff theater. That is how Europe gets fewer speeches and more serious companies.
