Simon Willison’s Weblog Simon Willison

OpenAI shipped a new Decisions API, and Simon Willison already wrapped it in an llm plugin. It also takes images, not just text, and the pricing is lower than Jev’s.

OpenAI has released a new Decisions API, following the version it previewed at last week’s DevDay. Simon Willison moved quickly: because he already had an llm-typesafe plugin for talking to Jev, he had GPT-6 Astra read OpenAI’s documentation and build an llm-openai-decisions plugin in the same style.

The hook here is that OpenAI’s gpt-6-luna decision model can handle image input as well as text. That gives it a small edge over Jev on capability, even as the two systems stay close in spirit.

The billing model is also familiar. Both charge only for input, not output. OpenAI’s rate is 10 cents per million input tokens, while Jev charges 4.2 cents per million. Not a huge saga, but enough to make the comparison immediate.

On the API side, the shape is nearly the same, at least conceptually. Jev offers three question types — yes/no, choices, and scores — and OpenAI Decisions uses the same trio. Willison also shows an install command, llm install llm-openai-decisions, plus an example query against an image attachment that asks whether the picture contains any mammals and returns a predicate result with probability 0.0. The README, he says, has the rest.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the kind of move that makes open tooling useful: new API drops, plugin appears, everyone gets to compare the thing instead of stare at a blog post. OpenAI may have shipped the feature, but the quick remix is what turns it into something people can actually use. The real competition here is not grand strategy; it’s who makes the wrapper painless.
