OpenAI is rolling GPT-6 into ChatGPT for all users, even free ones. It can now answer with buttons, maps and mini-apps instead of a wall of text.

OpenAI is pushing GPT-6 into ChatGPT for everyone, and the biggest change is visual. The company’s new Intelligent UI can turn an answer into something closer to an app: graphics, buttons, forms and small tools, all built into the chat itself. Paying users started getting it yesterday, and the free version follows today.

The model line is split by tier. Pro, Business and Enterprise customers get GPT-6 Sol in chat, while free users and the Go plan get the smaller GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI already shipped both models in September for ChatGPT Work, Codex and its API, so those products aren’t changing here. In chat, GPT-6 takes over as the default, though GPT-5.6 Sol stays available separately. GPT-6 Astra remains locked behind the Pro thinking mode.

OpenAI is also selling this as a speed upgrade. GPT-6 can start answering before it has finished thinking or searching the web, the company says. For questions that involve web search, GPT-6 Instant begins responding 44 percent sooner on average than its predecessor. OpenAI also says internal tests show the model reaches the point of harder questions more often, but it didn’t publish numbers.

The more striking part may be what happens inside the answer box. A recipe can resize ingredient amounts for the number of guests. Planning prompts can surface checklists, embedded maps and multiple-choice follow-up questions. Users can also ask ChatGPT to spin up a calculator, a bill splitter for roommates or a simple game in seconds. Under the hood, OpenAI says the model is assembling ready-made components as it writes, and sticking with plain text when that works better.

The rollout is gradual on the web and in updated apps. People who don’t want the visuals can switch them off under “Layout and visuals” on the web, though OpenAI says some graphics may still appear. The feature isn’t coming to the Pro thinking mode or the older desktop apps for macOS and Windows. And the push lands in a messy competitive moment: Wired says the new interface leans more show than tell, Search Engine Journal worries built-in tools will pull traffic away from websites, and OpenAI is also facing pressure after Anthropic’s smaller Sonnet 5.5 passed GPT-6 in rankings.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is classic platform behavior: first absorb the web, then replace the parts people used to visit. Built-in calculators and mini-apps are convenient, sure, but they also turn ChatGPT into one more place that keeps the clicks for itself. Very efficient. Very on brand.
