Epic Games reportedly pivoting to "AI first" game development model

Ars Technica Kyle Orland

Rumor — unconfirmed reporting.

Epic Games is reportedly letting AI write the code and art for a Disney-linked shooter. The project’s now delayed, and the shift may say more about Epic’s priorities than its pace.

Epic Games is reportedly taking a hard turn toward “AI first” development on its collaboration with Disney. A Bloomberg report, citing unnamed people familiar with the project and internal Epic messages, says the company wants models to write the code and guide the art for an upcoming shooter tied to the deal with the Walt Disney Company.

That is a sharp break from the old way of doing things. According to the report, human developers are still involved, but their job is shifting toward managing and directing work produced by models such as Anthropic’s Claude. The language in the internal messages is unusually blunt: “no more hand-written code,” and art assets created through “full AI workflows.”

The Disney partnership itself is big enough that the change lands with a thud. Epic and Disney announced a $1.5 billion collaboration in early 2024, and the game was supposed to arrive in March 2027 as a Marvel- and Star Wars-themed shooter. That timeline is gone now.

Bloomberg says the project has been delayed indefinitely, with the AI shakeup arriving on top of development that was already described as understaffed and slower than expected. So this is not just a tooling story. It’s a sign that Epic is trying to rewire how a major game gets made while the clock is still running.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the sort of corporate AI move that sounds efficient right up until the art looks like it was assembled by committee and a chatbot. Epic is betting that “AI first” will read as modern, but it also reads like management trying to turn a messy production problem into a philosophy. That’s very Silicon Valley, and only slightly reassuring.
