OpenAI’s Dots are always-on ChatGPT agents with their own cloud computer and browser. They can work 24/7 across 4,000 apps, so the bot now does the busywork.

OpenAI is rolling out Dots, a new kind of always-on agent inside ChatGPT. Each dot comes with its own cloud computer and browser, and OpenAI says it can keep working toward a goal around the clock instead of waiting for a person to poke it again.

The pitch is broad on purpose. Dots connect to more than 4,000 apps through plugins, and you can reach them in ChatGPT on desktop, web, and mobile. They can also be messaged in Slack and Teams, which makes them feel less like a side feature and more like a workplace helper that just lives wherever the work already happens.

OpenAI says the system learns from feedback and returns finished work for review rather than dumping every step in your lap. There are also guardrails: Custom Rules, Activity View, and auto review are meant to keep the user in control while the agent does its thing.

For now, the rollout is limited to Pro and Business Premium. That keeps Dots firmly in paid territory, at least at launch, even as OpenAI pushes the idea that agents should be more than chat boxes with a few extra tricks.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

Always-on agents are useful right up until they become a polite way to outsource your judgment. The real test isn’t whether Dots can touch 4,000 apps; it’s whether people still want to supervise a digital intern that never clocks out. That’s the whole AI industry in one sentence, really.
