That thinking sits behind Unified Edge, which debuted in November 2025 and won Cisco the 2026 Tech Innovation CUBEd Award for the most innovative IoT or edge platform. The system combines compute, networking and storage in a modular setup built for real-time AI inferencing. Cisco says it supports CPUs and GPUs, up to 120 terabytes of storage, redundant power and cooling, and integrated 25-gigabit networking.
The bigger idea is control. Cisco tied Unified Edge to its Intersight management platform so customers can monitor and manage thousands of edge locations from one place. James Leach, Cisco’s director of product management, said the goal is to give customers one solution that spans from the data center to the edge, rather than a bag of separate tools.

The company expanded its Hybrid Mesh Firewall strategy in June 2025, and Unified Edge adds multilayer zero-trust protections, telemetry and policy controls directly into the system. Leach argued that security has to be built in at every level, not bolted on later, which is a useful line when AI systems are generating more traffic and more attack surface at the same time.
Cisco is also betting that networking will matter more, not less, as agents start swarming through tools and services. The company has said agentic workflows can create about 450% more network traffic than equivalent human-driven processes.
