OpenAI is giving ChatGPT a much more visual face. On Wednesday, the company is rolling out a new interface it calls Intelligent UI alongside GPT-6, and the pitch is simple: answers won’t just be text anymore. They’ll often include interactive pieces users can tap, edit, or work through directly.

That means buttons, custom calculators for specific tasks, charts that react to input, editable graphs, and other embedded elements. OpenAI says the idea is to make complex topics easier to learn. In practice, it also makes the chatbot feel less like a blank page and more like a small app that can build itself on demand.

In a demo for journalists, OpenAI showed ChatGPT producing diagrams and other visuals on the spot. Aarush Selvan, a product manager at the company, said ChatGPT has mostly been a text interface so far, but OpenAI wants it to help people get things done. He pointed to everyday jobs like planning a recipe or a trip, as well as learning something new.

One example was a college student asking how an airplane wing generates lift. ChatGPT responded by quickly creating diagrams meant to explain how flight works. OpenAI also showed examples for recipes, bicycle mechanics, a multi-day hiking route, and a personal savings calculator. Users won’t be stuck with all that visual noise, either. The feature is customizable, so people can turn the visuals down if they want a plainer chat.

Intelligent UI rolls out globally with GPT-6 for Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise users on Wednesday, then reaches free and lower-cost Go users on Thursday. That staggered release says a lot: OpenAI clearly thinks the future of chat is not just smarter text, but a messier little bundle of text, tools, and mini-apps.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is OpenAI’s clearest admission yet that plain chat is becoming table stakes. Text-only assistants are fine until the job gets messy, and then buttons, charts, and calculators do the real work. The trick is whether all this “helpfulness” makes ChatGPT clearer — or just busier in a nicer font.
