Anthropic signs $10B deal with AI cloud startup Volta

Anthropic just locked in a $10B, six-year cloud deal with Volta, a startup barely a year old. The compute will come from a Norway data center running Nvidia's newest chips — a huge bet on unproven infrastructure.
Anthropic keeps writing checks it needs serious hardware to cash, and its newest one is a doozy. Bloomberg reports the Claude maker has struck a $10 billion, six-year agreement with Volta, an AI cloud startup that didn't exist a year ago. That's a staggering sum to hand a company with almost no track record, but in the current compute arms race, apparently a young company with the right chips and the right land beats an established one with neither.
The mechanics here matter. Volta isn't building this alone — it's teaming with Bitdeer, a crypto-mining outfit pivoting into AI infrastructure, to construct a 133 megawatt data center in Norway. Norway makes sense as a location: cheap, largely renewable hydropower and a cool climate that cuts cooling costs, both increasingly attractive as AI data centers strain electrical grids elsewhere. The facility will run on Nvidia's Vera Rubin architecture, the chipmaker's newest AI silicon, and Volta belongs to Nvidia's Cloud Partner program, a growing club of providers that lean on Nvidia GPUs rather than building custom silicon.
Anthropic didn't confirm the deal when TechCrunch asked, but the pattern is impossible to miss. This is just the latest in a string of massive compute commitments the company has made in recent months, following deals with SpaceX and Amazon. Anthropic is essentially buying insurance against a future where it can't get enough chips to train and run Claude models, and it's doing so by spreading bets across multiple providers rather than depending on one.
What's notable is who's cashing in on this boom. A crypto miner and a startup founded this year are now sitting on a $10 billion contract with one of the most closely watched AI labs on the planet. That's the real story of the AI infrastructure buildout right now — the money is flowing so fast that companies with little history are becoming critical suppliers almost overnight, simply because they showed up with land, power, and Nvidia's blessing at the right moment.
My take
A one-year-old startup landing a $10 billion contract says less about Volta's brilliance and more about how desperate the compute crunch has become. Anthropic is essentially outsourcing infrastructure risk to whoever can get chips and power online fastest, crypto-mining pedigree included. Expect more of these odd-couple partnerships as AI labs chase megawatts wherever they can find them, and expect a few of these young providers to stumble under the weight of six-year promises.
