Robotics Levels of Autonomy
SemiAnalysis 11 months ago
SemiAnalysis introduced a five-level classification system for robot autonomy, ranging from Level 0 (pre-programmed scripted motion) to Level 4 (force-dependent tasks), to track progress toward general-purpose robots. Level 0 robots currently dominate manufacturing, with automotive factories operating 400-1,650 robots per facility at integration costs of 4-6 times the robot hardware cost. General-purpose robots in Levels 2-3 are entering early production and pilot stages for inspection, navigation, and low-skill manipulation tasks, potentially lowering barriers to automation for smaller businesses beyond the capital-intensive automotive and electronics sectors that have historically dominated robotics adoption.
