OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face executives urged the UN to coordinate globally on AI due to societal risks from rapid development. Sam Altman called for national and international standards covering AI capability measurement, risk assessment, safeguards, and human oversight, plus speedy incident reporting protocols. The push shifts discussions at the UN toward shared benchmarks and reporting rather than rejecting new global AI governance.
ByteDance’s subsidiary used British AI infrastructure startup Nscale to rent access to Nvidia chips, according to reports. The reports say this arrangement would cover about 74%. As a result, ByteDance can obtain Nvidia compute through rental infrastructure that helps it avoid US chip rules.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed bills on Monday that require data center operators to disclose more about how their facilities affect local electricity bills and water supply. The embassy submission warned tech firms could face fines for not offering the algorithm opt-out option. Australia’s government responded that the plan is meant to return control to individuals rather than to give governments control.
