Vangrid raises $9M seed to build a decentralised spatial intelligence network for the Physical AI era

Dutch startup Vangrid just raised $9M to turn everyday phone cameras into a mapping network for robots and AI. It's crowdsourced spatial data, but with blockchain verification so companies can actually trust it.

Robots need to see the world, and right now most of them are relying on maps that are either stale, expensive, or both. Vangrid, a startup out of the Netherlands, thinks it has a fix: skip the fleets of lidar-equipped vans entirely and just use the phones already sitting in people's pockets. The company closed a $9 million seed round to build out what it calls a decentralised spatial intelligence network, with backers including HashKey, Crypto.com Capital, Animoca Brands, Borderless, Gate Labs, and Mapleblock.

The pitch is straightforward once you see it. Traditional mapping companies send out specialised vehicles to capture street-level data, which is slow, costly, and quickly outdated. Crowdsourced alternatives exist too, but they typically lack the verification layer that enterprise customers actually need. Vangrid wants to sit in the middle: let ordinary people capture data with the cameras and sensors already in their phones, then run that data through onchain verification so a company buying it knows where it came from and that it's real. Faces and license plates get blurred on the device itself, before anything leaves the phone, and each capture gets checked and logged before it hits the enterprise API.

What makes this interesting isn't just the privacy layer, it's the scaling logic. A city goes from unmapped to enterprise-ready as fast as people walk through it with their phones out, rather than waiting on a procurement cycle for specialised capture vehicles. CEO Robert Brighton frames the stakes bluntly: without this kind of grid, he says, billion-dollar robots stay blind to the messiness of real human environments. That's a fair point. A warehouse robot or an autonomous delivery bot doesn't care how elegant your training data is if the map it's working from is six months stale.

Vangrid says real transactions are already moving through the platform on both the contributor and customer sides, and it has signed new memoranda of understanding with data partners while talking to companies building defence and robotics platforms. The fresh capital goes toward growing the network, building out the edge-computation pipeline that handles on-device processing, and deepening those enterprise ties, particularly in defence and autonomous systems, two sectors where stale or unverifiable spatial data is more than just an inconvenience.

My take

Turning phones into a paid sensor army for robots is a clever workaround for the capital costs that have kept mapping locked up by a handful of big players, and the onchain provenance angle at least tries to solve the trust problem that sinks most crowdsourced data efforts. Whether people actually want their daily walks quietly training defence and robotics platforms for token payouts is a separate question, and one Vangrid's marketing conveniently skips past.
