US company’s AI lets Ukraine’s cheap kamikaze drones track targets on their own

Ukraine's cheap $400 Shrike drones are getting AI upgrades that let them lock onto targets and finish the job on their own. That's 50,000 kamikaze drones about to get a lot harder to dodge.

Half a mile out, an operator flying a Shrike drone can now flip a switch and walk away from the controls. The drone takes it from there, tracking whatever moving target it was pointed at and flying itself into a kill. That's the promise behind a new partnership between Ukrainian drone maker SkyFall and Auterion, a US defense tech company that's quietly become one of the more consequential names in this war.

The Shrike itself is nothing fancy. It's a first-person-view drone that costs about $400, the kind of disposable munition Ukraine has used to blow up Russian tanks and, in some documented cases, helicopters in flight. What changes the math is the Skynode S kit Auterion is bolting onto these things: onboard AI hardware and software that turns a human-guided munition into something closer to a fire-and-forget weapon. Fly it manually into the target area, mark what you want destroyed, then hand off to the machine for terminal guidance.

Lorenz Meier, Auterion's co-founder and CEO, described the handoff plainly in his conversation with Ars Technica: the operator does the hard part of navigation, and the software does the hard part of not missing. That division of labor matters because Russian electronic warfare has gotten good at jamming the radio links FPV pilots depend on. A drone that can finish the job autonomously once it's close enough doesn't need a clean signal all the way to impact.

What's striking here isn't the concept, autonomous terminal guidance has been discussed for years, but the scale. SkyFall and Auterion aren't talking about a pilot program. They're talking about 50,000 units shipping in the coming months, with deliveries to the Ukrainian military already underway since mid-July. That's not an experiment, that's a production line turning cheap drones into semi-autonomous weapons at a pace that outstrips a lot of what NATO procurement has managed for comparable tech.

The bigger story is what this does to the economics of the war. A $400 drone that can track and hit a moving vehicle without a steady hand on the stick is a very different threat than the same drone flown manually, and it's an even more different threat than a $2 million anti-armor missile. Ukraine has spent three years proving that mass-produced cheap hardware plus decent software can erode expensive Russian equipment faster than Moscow can replace it. Adding autonomy to that formula doesn't just make each drone better, it makes the whole approach scale in a way manual piloting never could.

My take

I don't think anyone should be surprised this came from a startup and not a defense prime, because the primes are still selling million-dollar systems while a $400 drone with a software patch is doing the actual killing more efficiently. The real story of this war has been software eating hardware's lunch, and autonomy is just the next obvious step nobody wanted to say out loud. Export controls and ethics debates aside, this technology is not staying in Ukraine, and pretending otherwise is naive.
