Shopify debuts Canvas, a way to build online stores by chatting with AI

Shopify launched Canvas, a new way to build stores by chatting with its AI. It renders the real site as you go, so you can tweak live instead of poking at code.

Shopify is betting that store setup can feel more like a conversation than a construction project. On Thursday, the company introduced Canvas, a site-building tool that lets merchants ask its AI agent, Sidekick, to build and edit an online store for them.

That’s a step beyond Shopify’s earlier no-code builder, which still asked merchants to work inside a chosen theme by moving blocks and sections around. If someone wanted something more ambitious, they usually had to touch code or hire help. Canvas shifts that work into chat: tell Sidekick what you want, and it changes the store for you.

The key twist is that the edits aren’t just being previewed. Shopify says Canvas shows the actual code behind the store as it updates, so merchants can test interactivity, animation, and how pages look on different screen sizes. Sidekick also snaps screenshots along the way so it can see the same view the merchant sees. People can still click individual elements directly, but Shopify clearly expects most users to keep the conversation going in chat.

Sidekick isn’t brand new. Shopify has already used it to write code, build apps, customize themes, and make other edits. What’s new is pulling those pieces into a single full-site workflow, with the ability to zoom and pan around the whole store while changing the site’s actual files. To make that possible, Shopify said it gave Sidekick direct access to theme files and simplified the theme architecture so the system can better understand the store’s structure, logic, and design.

Canvas is still early, and Shopify is drawing some hard lines around what it can do for now. Third-party theme support, app blocks and extensions, markets, translations, rollouts, and theme updates are not in the initial release, and the product works only on desktop. Shopify says those pieces will come later. For now, Canvas is another sign that store building is moving toward AI-first tools, with fewer merchants needing to learn code just to get started.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the right bet, because the real bottleneck for most online sellers isn’t imagination, it’s labor and patience. The catch is that AI tools always look magical right up until they meet messy themes, app extensions, and all the boring stuff merchants actually use. Shopify is doing the sensible closed-platform thing here: own the stack, simplify the rules, then let the chatbot pretend it was easy all along.
