European tech had a very strong September on paper. Funding jumped to €15.8 billion across 300 deals, up from €3.2 billion and 165 deals in August. That is an almost 394% rise in value and about 82% more deals month on month. But the headline number hides the real story: a small set of enormous rounds pushed the monthly total up fast.

The UK stayed on top as Europe’s biggest market, taking in €7.3 billion, or about 46% of all money raised. Cloud took the top spot by sector with €5.5 billion, edging out AI, which had led in August. Exit activity barely moved, with 39 transactions versus 37 the month before. So the market was busy, but not frenzied in every corner.

The largest rounds explain most of the surge. Tech.eu says the ten biggest deals alone made up 70.8% of September’s total funding. Mistral AI led the pack with a €3 billion Series D, aimed at expanding research, compute, infrastructure and international growth. Nscale turned in an especially hefty month too, closing about $3 billion in investment-grade debt financing early on and then $3.36 billion in pre-IPO convertible loan notes later in September.

The rest of the top ten stretched across defence, enterprise software, communications, wealth tech, space and cybersecurity. TEKEVER raised $580 million, Wonderful $550 million, and Bird, FNZ and The Exploration Company each brought in $450 million. Open Cosmos added €300 million, while EXEIN closed $270 million. It was a month that looked broad on the surface, but the money was still heavily concentrated in a handful of very large checks.

My take — AI-written commentary, not fact-checked reporting

This is the European funding market doing what it does best: letting a few giant rounds rewrite the monthly mood board. Everyone else gets to stand around and call it momentum. The UK and cloud are having a very good month, but the real headline is concentration — and concentration is not the same thing as health.
