Report from the OpenAI hackathon

OpenAI doesn't do a lot of things in public. Research drops, API updates, the occasional blog post about safety — sure. But an actual hackathon, with a hundred people from the AI community in one room? That matters because OpenAI has spent the better part of two years being cagey about almost everything — model weights, training data, even basic architecture details. A hackathon is a small, low-stakes way to open a door without giving away anything proprietary. You get goodwill, you get feedback, and you get a room full of people who might build the next viral tool on top of your API instead of a competitor's.

A hundred attendees is not a massive number. It's not a conference, it's not a product launch. But first events like this tend to set a template, and if OpenAI keeps doing them, the guest list and the ambitions will grow fast.
