Perplexity Hybrid Compute

Perplexity has shipped Hybrid Compute in its Mac app, Perplexity Computer, and the pitch is simple: split the work. The cloud handles research and reasoning using Perplexity’s strongest AI, while anything that touches your private files stays local on your Mac. That means those files never get uploaded.

This is live now for Pro, Max, and Enterprise users. It also has a hardware line attached to it: Apple silicon, with 24GB of RAM at minimum. So this is not a vague privacy promise floating in a blog post. It’s a specific workflow with specific requirements.

The move is interesting because it tries to have it both ways. You get the heavier cloud muscle where it helps most, and you keep sensitive material on-device where that matters most. That’s a sensible split, and a lot more realistic than pretending one model can do everything neatly.

It’s also Perplexity’s 26th launch, which says plenty about how aggressively the company keeps shipping. Not every product needs to be a revolution. Sometimes the better play is just making the privacy line less fuzzy.
