Open-source AI developer Mistral closes €3B funding round

Mistral AI has landed a massive €3 billion funding round, a haul the French startup says puts its value at more than €20 billion. Samsung Electronics led the raise, with more than two dozen backers joining in, including Salesforce Ventures, Nvidia and ASML, which led Mistral’s previous round.

The company has built its reputation on open-source large language models, and that’s still the center of the story. Its flagship model, Mistral Medium 3.5, is described as beating much larger systems on coding benchmarks. But Mistral is no longer just a model shop. It now sells managed cloud versions of its software and a bundle of enterprise tools for building custom LLMs.

One piece of that stack is Mistral Forge, a cloud service for creating synthetic training data. Another is Mistral Studio, which handles pretraining and reinforcement learning, then helps turn custom models into agents. Those agents can be tied to data repositories, given system prompts and wrapped in guardrails. There’s also an error-mitigation feature that retries actions that fail, plus an AI registry for storing agents, datasets and prompts, and version control for rolling components back if a bug slips in.

Mistral is also selling a packaged agent called Vibe, which can write code and handle simpler office work like making spreadsheets. A key selling point is that it can run on-premises, which should make some buyers in regulated industries breathe easier. The company says it already has more than 125 enterprise clients, including ASML, Airbus and HSBC. In April, it said monthly revenue could reach $80 million by year-end. The new money will go toward computing infrastructure for training and toward expanding beyond its home market.
