Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI to support the development of artificial general intelligence with distributed economic benefits. The companies will partner to build a hardware and software platform on Microsoft Azure specifically designed to scale toward AGI, with Microsoft becoming OpenAI's exclusive cloud provider. Microsoft will gain a competitive advantage in cloud AI infrastructure while OpenAI secures dedicated computing resources for its research.

We’re partnering to develop a hardware and software platform within Microsoft Azure which will scale to AGI. We’ll jointly develop new Azure AI supercomputing technologies, and Microsoft will become our exclusive cloud provider—so we’ll be working hard together to further extend Microsoft Azure’s capabilities in large-scale AI systems.
