AI drug-discovery startups have raised billions on similar language about accelerating breakthroughs, with results that are, charitably, still pending. OpenAI's framing here — GPT-5 as a research assistant rather than a diagnostic tool — is the safer, more defensible claim. It sidesteps the regulatory minefield of anything resembling clinical decision-making and instead sells the model as a smart intern: good at summarizing, drafting, and pattern-spotting across huge amounts of text.

The real test isn't whether GPT-5 can talk convincingly about biology — large language models have been decent at that for a while now. It's whether it can meaningfully shorten the distance between a research question and a validated answer, in a field where being confidently wrong has actual consequences. OpenAI's post doesn't answer that. It just asserts the work is happening.
